SUSPENSION

Di-iodohydroxyquinoline 200mg
Metronidazole Benzoate eq. to Metronidazole 200mg

Pharmacology

Metronidazole has activity against protozoa and anaerobic bacteria. It has a wide range of uses including amebiasis, giardiasis and trichomoniasis, vaginosis, antibiotic associated colitis, surgical infections, prophylaxis, inflammatory bowel diseases.

Di-iodohydroxyquinoline is synthesized and used clinically as luminal amebicides particularly to treat asymptomatic cysts passers, such direct acting amebicidal agents have been used in combination with metronidazole to treat intestinal froms of amebiasis.

Di-iodohydroxyquinoline is partly and irregularly absorbed from the G.I.T, Metronidazole is readily absorbed following administration by mouth and bioavailability reaches 100%. Peak plasma concentrations of approximately 5 and 10ug/ml are reaches within 1-2 hours after single dose of 250mg respectively.


Indications
  • Intestinal Amebiasis
  • Giardiasis
  • Prophylaxis of anaerobic bacterial infections
  • Non Specific Vaginitis
  • Trichomoniasis

Dosage
AMBEASIS GIARDIASIS
ADULTS

3 teaspoonful (15ml) thrice daily for 5-10 days.

1½ teaspoonful (7.5ml) thrice daily for 10 days.
CHILDREN
upto 4 years:

1 teaspoonful (5ml) thrice daily for 5-10 days.

1/2 teaspoonful (2.5ml) thrice daily for 10 days.

4-12 years:
2 teaspoonful (10ml) thrice daily for 5-10 days.

1 teaspoonful (5ml) thrice daily for 10 days.


Side Effects

The adverse effects are generally dose related. G.I. disturbances especially nausea, anorexia, vomiting, headache and unpleasant metallic taste very rare an reversible when the drug is withdrawn.


Contra - Indications

Daragon is contraindicated in patients hypersensitive to Di-iodohydroxyquinoline, iodine or halogenated hydroxyquinoline and Metronidazole. In patients with impaired kidney or liver function, blood dyscrasias or with active diseases of C.N.S.


Precautions

As a rule with all such preparations (Compounds) Metronidazole should be used with great care in patients with blood dyscrasias or with active diseases of C.N.S. It should be avoided during pregnancy, especially in the first trimester.
