Prescribing Information
Description:

MEDROX is a member of the chemical class of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents. MEDROX is available in Capsules. each capsule contains Piroxicam U.S.P. 20mg. MEDROX is a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agent which also possesses analgesic and antipyretic properties. Edema, erythema, tissue proliferation, fever, and pain can be inhibited. MEDROX is well absorbed following oral administration. With food there is a slight delay in the rate but not the extent of absorption following oral administration. The plasma half-life is approximately 50 hours in man and stable plasma concentrations are maintained throughout the day on once-daily dosage. Drug plasma concentrations are proportional for 10 and 20 mg doses and generally peak within three to five hours after medication. A single 20 mg dose generally produces peak Piroxicam plasma levels of 1.5 to 2 mcg /ml while maximum drug plasma concentrations, after repeated daily ingestion of 20 mg Piroxicam, usually stabilize at 3 to 8 mcg/ ml, it is extensively metabolized and less than 5% of the daily dose is excreted unchanged in urine and faeces.


Indications

Rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, ankylosing spondylitis, acute gout, pain after operative intervention, acute trauma and primary dysmenorrhoea.


Contraindications

Active peptic ulceration. MEDROX should not be used in those patients who have previously shown hypersensitivity to the drug. The potential exists for cross sensitivity to Aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. The safety of MEDROX during pregnancy or during lactation has not yet been establised.


Reactions

MEDROX is generally well tolerated, Gastrointestinal symptoms are the most commonly encountered side effects but in most instances do not interfere with the course of therapy. Edema, mainly ankle edema and CNS effects have been reported rarely. Dermal hypersensitivity reactions and photoallergic reactions have been reported.


Dosage and Administration

Rheumatoid Arthritis. Osteoarthritis (Arthrosis, Degenerative Joint disease), Ankylosing Spondylitis. the recommended starting dose is 20 mg given as single daily dose the majority of patients will be maintained on 20 mg given as single daily dose. Acute Musculoskeletal disorders: Therapy should be initiated with 40 mg daily for the first two days given in single or divided doses daily. Treatment can be prolonged for 7 to 14 days with a dose of 20 mg daily. Acute Gout: Initial dose of 40 mg given in a single or divided doses daily. Post Operative and Post- Traumatic pain. The recommended dose is 20 mg to 40 mg daily in a single or divided doses. The dose can be reduced ot 20 mg daily according to severity of pain. Dysmenorrhoea: The treatment of primary dysmenorrhoea 40 mg for the first two days followed by a single daily dose of 20 mg for next one to three days.
